3D Camera

Inline height and shape inspection requires a measurement volume that covers the product and its expected position variation. The MV-DP4000 family combines reference distances from 22.6 to 940 mm with different X and Z ranges, 405 or 650 nm lasers and three laser-safety classes. Surface response, profile spacing, repeatability, triggering and safety controls determine whether the selected geometry works at production speed.

Inspect height and shape across the required product volume

A laser profile sensor records a cross-section while the product or sensor moves. The resulting profiles can support dimensional checks, surface inspection and position measurement. Stable results require suitable measurement geometry, enough profiles in the transport direction and a controlled mechanical installation.

Selection question

Select the measurement volume before comparing detail

Reference distance sets the nominal mounting geometry. The X range must cover product width and position variation, while the Z range must cover height variation and mechanical tolerances. Once the product fits inside that volume, compare profile spacing, Z resolution and repeatability.

Validate the moving surface

Scan representative products with the intended surface condition, sensor angle, encoder and transport speed. Include reflective, dark and sloped regions. Acceptance should be based on the measured profile, not on the nominal range alone.

Reference distance and range

The eight supplied combinations cover reference distances from 22.6 to 940 mm. X range at reference distance runs from 14 to 515 mm and Z range from 5.2 to 900 mm. These values are available only in the listed SKU combinations.

Detail and profile spacing

Use the SKU-specific profile-data interval, Z resolution and Z repeatability. Calculate spacing in the direction of motion from transport speed and the effective profile rate. Verify the result at minimum and maximum production speed.

Laser wavelength

The family includes 405 and 650 nm models. Surface colour, reflection, translucency and ambient light can change signal quality. Test both wavelengths when the material response is uncertain.

Laser safety class

The supplied models are Class 2, Class 3R or Class 3B. Include access to the beam, guarding, interlocks, warning labels and work procedures in the machine risk assessment.

Trigger mode, power consumption, dimensions, weight and detailed performance limits remain SKU specifications below the selector.

Define acceptance with production profiles

Test the complete sensor, motion and processing chain under representative conditions.

  • Confirm that product width, height and position tolerances remain inside the measurement volume.
  • Measure repeatability over warm-up time, ambient-temperature variation and the expected surface range.
  • Verify encoder direction, trigger timing and profile delivery at minimum and maximum line speed.
  • Document the laser-safety controls and confirm that guarding permits cleaning and maintenance.

Inputs for the business case

Use measured feasibility results and current production records.

  • Current inspection labour, sampling rate, false rejects, missed defects and rework.
  • Sensor, controller, encoder, mechanics, guarding, software and integration costs.
  • Cleaning, calibration checks, changeovers, downtime and preventive maintenance.

MV-DP4000 specification questions

How do reference distance and measurement range relate?

Reference distance defines the nominal sensor-to-object geometry. X range is stated at that distance and Z range defines the usable height span. The near and far X widths can differ, so check the complete SKU specification.

How is profile spacing in the motion direction calculated?

Divide transport speed by the effective number of profiles per second, using consistent units. The effective rate depends on the sensor settings and processing chain, so confirm it during the feasibility test.

Are Z resolution and Z repeatability interchangeable?

No. Z resolution describes the documented height increment. Repeatability describes variation when the same target is measured repeatedly under stated conditions. Production accuracy also depends on the surface, mounting and calibration method.

When should 405 or 650 nm be selected?

Select by measured signal quality on representative parts. Surface colour, reflection, translucency and ambient light affect the result. The two wavelengths are available only in specific measurement geometries.

Which laser safety classes occur in this family?

The supplied variants include Class 2, Class 3R and Class 3B. Use the selected SKU class in the machine risk assessment and determine guarding, interlocks and work procedures with a qualified laser-safety specialist.

Can all range and wavelength values be combined?

No. The selector contains eight supplied SKU combinations. Values from separate combinations cannot be assembled into an additional sensor configuration.
