Inline height and shape inspection depends on matching the sensor geometry to the product and mounting distance. The MV-DP2000 family spans different reference distances and X and Z measurement ranges, with 405, 650 or 660 nm laser configurations. Profile spacing, Z repeatability, scan rate and laser-safety measures determine whether the selected measurement volume works under production conditions.

Measure height and shape without stopping the line

A laser profile sensor records a cross-section of the product. Combining successive profiles with known motion produces height and shape data for dimensional checks, surface inspection or position measurement. The result depends on the measurement geometry, profile spacing, surface response and mechanical stability of the installation.

Selection question

Fit the measurement volume around the product first

The profile sensor must cover the product width and expected height variation at the available mounting distance. Start with reference distance and the X and Z ranges. Then verify whether profile spacing, Z repeatability and scan rate resolve the smallest accepted feature at production speed.

Test the complete moving measurement

A static profile does not prove an inline application. Scan representative good and defective products with the intended encoder, transport speed, surface condition and sensor angle. Include dark, reflective and sloped areas in the acceptance set.

Reference distance and range

The supplied combinations cover reference distances from 21.4 to 925 mm. X range at reference distance runs from 14.3 to 485 mm, while the documented Z ranges run from 6 to 910 mm. Only the listed combinations are available.

Detail and line speed

Use the SKU values for profile-data interval, Z resolution, Z repeatability and scan rate. Calculate the profile spacing in the transport direction from line speed and effective scan frequency, including exposure and processing limits.

Laser wavelength

The family contains 405, 650 and 660 nm configurations. Surface colour, reflectivity and ambient light can change the returned signal. Compare wavelengths with actual parts instead of selecting by colour alone.

Laser safety class

The supplied models are Class 3R or Class 3B. The machine design must address access to the beam, guarding, interlocks, warning labels and the applicable risk assessment. Treat safety class as an integration decision.

Client software, data output, digital I/O, dimensions, weight and detailed performance limits remain SKU specifications below the selector.

Define acceptance with measured profiles

Validate the sensor, mechanics, motion and processing as one measurement chain.

  • Confirm that the full product and its height variation remain inside the measurement range, including tolerances and vibration.
  • Measure repeatability on the real surface over warm-up time and expected ambient-temperature changes.
  • Run at minimum and maximum line speed with the intended encoder and trigger arrangement.
  • Document laser-safety controls and verify that guarding does not obstruct the optical path or maintenance access.

Inputs for the business case

Use production records and the feasibility test. Do not base the calculation on nominal sensor specifications alone.

  • Current inspection labour, sampling rate, missed defects, false rejects and rework.
  • Sensor, controller, encoder, mechanics, guarding, software and integration costs.
  • Cleaning, calibration checks, changeovers, downtime and preventive-maintenance time.

MV-DP2000 specification questions

How do reference distance and measurement range relate?

Reference distance defines the nominal sensor-to-object geometry. The X range is stated at that distance, while the Z range describes the usable height span. Near and far X widths can differ, so use the complete SKU specification when checking the measurement volume.

How is profile spacing in the transport direction calculated?

Divide transport speed by the effective number of profiles per second. For example, use consistent units such as millimetres per second and profiles per second. Validate the effective rate with the selected exposure, output and processing settings.

Are Z resolution and Z repeatability the same?

No. Z resolution describes the documented height increment, while repeatability describes the variation when measuring the same target under stated conditions. Neither value alone defines accuracy on the production surface.

Why are several laser wavelengths available?

Surface colour, reflectivity, translucency and ambient light affect the returned laser signal. The family includes 405, 650 and 660 nm variants, but not every wavelength is available for every measurement geometry.

What is the difference between Class 3R and Class 3B models?

They require different laser-risk controls. Use the class stated for the selected SKU in the machine risk assessment and determine guarding, interlocks, access control and work procedures with a qualified laser-safety specialist.

Can any X, Z and wavelength value be combined?

No. The selector contains 14 supplied SKU combinations. Choose from those combinations; values from different rows cannot be assembled into a new sensor configuration.
