Reading DPM on tough metal parts at line speed

Low-contrast Data Matrix on machined metal looked fine on a desk. On the line, oil film and occlusion told another story.

Context

An industrial manufacturer needed reliable Data Matrix / DPM reads on machined metal for genealogy. An integrator owned the cell I/O. Traceability was not optional — a silent miss was worse than a stop.

What broke the desktop demo

Oil film, cutting marks, curved surfaces and occasional partial occlusion. Marks that decode under soft light fail when specular reflections wipe contrast. Multi-row transfer without position correction adds another failure mode.

Constraints

Fixed takt, limited space for a tunnel, fail-closed behaviour required, maintainable recipes preferred over heroic tuning every shift.

Stack choice

Treat mark quality and lighting as first-class deliverables. Prefer a dedicated industrial code reader or a smart camera tuned for DPM with controlled illumination angles.
