Inspection lighting: backlight, ring, dome or strobe?

Pick light for the defect you must see — not for the brochure photo. Four patterns cover most industrial stations.

Light is part of the sensor

A camera without the right light is an expensive webcam. Most “algorithm problems” we inherit are lighting problems wearing a software costume.

Backlight

Best for silhouettes, edges, missing material and through-holes. When geometry beats surface texture, backlight is the default. Watch for refraction on transparent packs.

Ring / bright-field

On-axis fill for presence, simple print and features that need front illumination. On glossy film or metal, expect specular hotspots — then diffuse instead.

Dome / diffuse

Cosmetic and print on curved or shiny parts. Kills the glare that classical tools treat as defects. Packaging and polished metal live here more often than catalogues admit.

Strobe

Freezes motion at takt. Sync pulse width with exposure and trigger. Without strobe, you fight blur with ever-shorter exposures and ever-noisier images.

Dual-light thinking for codes

Tough marks on metal often need more than one illumination angle or colour. Hikrobot’s industrial code-reading hardware emphasises adaptable lighting — for example dual-colour polling on dedicated readers in the code platform family — because mark contrast is a lighting problem first.

Rule of thumb

Silhouette contrast → backlight. Surface appearance → diffuse. Moving part → strobe. Still stuck → change geometry before you change the neural net. Product page: Lighting.
